How Brake Pads and Rotors Work
When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure squeezes the brake pads against the rotors — metal discs attached to your wheels. Friction slows the wheels and your vehicle. Both parts wear with use, and they work as a team, so the condition of one affects the other.
When to Replace Brake Pads
- Squealing or squeaking when braking
- Grinding or a harsh metal-on-metal sound
- Longer stopping distances or a pedal that feels different
- Brake wear indicator or warning light on the dash
- Pad material that looks thin during a visual check — many shops recommend replacement when it gets down to roughly 3 mm
Pads wear faster with stop-and-go driving, heavier vehicles, and mountain descents.
Do I Need New Rotors Too?
Not always — it depends on measurement and condition. We check each rotor for thickness, scoring, rust ridges and warping. If rotors are worn past their minimum thickness, grooved, or causing pulsation, replacement is usually the better choice, because fresh pads on a damaged rotor wear unevenly and can feel and sound worse. Many modern rotors are thin enough that resurfacing isn’t always practical, so replacement is often the more reliable fix.
Pad Types: What’s Right for Your Vehicle?
| Pad type | Typical traits |
|---|---|
| Ceramic | Quiet, clean (low dust), smooth feel — popular for daily driving |
| Semi-metallic | Strong stopping and heat handling — common on trucks and heavier vehicles |
| Organic | Soft and quiet, but they wear faster |
We’ll recommend pads that suit your vehicle and how you drive.
After Your Brake Job
New pads and rotors work best after a short break-in period of normal driving with moderate, gradual braking. Avoid repeated hard stops in the first few days if you can. If anything feels or sounds off afterward, call us. Pairing the job with a brake fluid exchange when due keeps the whole system healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pads commonly last roughly 25,000 to 70,000 miles and rotors often last through a couple of sets of pads, but driving style, vehicle weight and terrain change that a lot.
Some noise can occur briefly during break-in, but persistent squealing should be checked — it can come from hardware, pad material, or rotor surface. Call us if it continues.
Yes — pads are replaced in pairs on an axle (both wheels, front or rear) so braking stays even and safe.
Yes. We’ll inspect all four corners and tell you which axle needs work.
